Easter is one of the most exciting times of the year for us. We celebrate the time when new life became possible through Jesus Christ's death, burial, and resurrection.
But before we rush to the celebration, let me ask you to slow down a moment to reflect and remember what makes it so meaningful.
God has provided you, as a parent, a very unique opportunity. In the midst of going through your family's Easter traditions and filling the Easter eggs, you have a special time to help your kids truly understand and respond to what Jesus has done.
One of the best ways to prepare your child for Easter conversation is to set the stage for what happened before the cross.
The cross will only start to make sense to them after they know what happened before that.
God created us to be in relationship with Him (Genesis 1:26–27), man sinned (Genesis 3), sin separated us (Isaiah 59:2), but from the very beginning, God promised to make a way to restore what was broken (Genesis 3:15).
You don’t have to try to explain everything, be an expert, or even understand it all. Just walking through the story together could have an impact.
Palm Sunday — Jesus entered as King (Matthew 21:1–11)
The Last Supper — Jesus shared a final meal with His disciples (Luke 22:7–20)
Good Friday — Jesus died on the cross for our sins (Matthew 27:32–50)
Easter Sunday — Jesus rose from the dead (Matthew 28:1–6)
This is where kids can start to see God's promise for restoration come about.
After taking the time to walk through this story together, take a moment to let them ask questions and respond to what they have learned.
One of your questions could be, " Why do you think Jesus did this?”
After they answer, remind them of this:
Jesus did this because he loves YOU so much, even though you sinned, and he wants a relationship with you! (Romans 5:8; Romans 10:9)
